Black Sabbath SolitudeTHE BLACK SABBATH MYSTERY OF VOCALS IN "SOLITUDE" AND "PLANET CARAVAN"There are several legends surrounding the origin of "Solitude" and "Planet Caravan", two beautiful Black Sabbath ballads. The first was released in 1971 on the Master of Reality album. Many attribute their vocals to drummer Bill Ward, but this is only a misunderstanding. Ward would only take Black Sabbath vocals on "It's Alright", track from the 1976 Technical Ecstasy album..In "Solitude," Ozzy Osbourne would prove to be a great singer by toning down his voice and accompanying Tony Iommi's acoustic arrangements. It was also on this record that for the first time the guitarist played the flute on a recording (inspired by his short stint in Jethro Tull in the late 1960s)...In "Planet Caravan," released a year earlier on the Paranoid album, Ozzy would use the same vocal technique, resorting only to a Leslie brand speaker to simulate the effects of vibrato...Ozzy Osbourne would never sing as low as in "Solitude" and "Planet Caravan" (I may be wrong). This makes the two songs become special in the discography of Black Sabbath and Ozzy himself in solo career.
